British Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Destinations

Industrial alcohol caution sign

British Foreign Office has included an additional eleven more nations to its travel advisory register concerning the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just recently, officials had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, following multiple high-profile cases including the tragic loss of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol commonly used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not designed for drinking.

While it is generated during the creation of spirits, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.

Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to detect.

Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists

Authorities minister a senior official stated that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"While having drinks overseas, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official warned.

"In case something feels off, such as a headache that's way worse than typical or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The full register of countries listed as presenting a danger of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
