Trans documentarian Sam Feder's newest feature "Heightened Scrutiny" presents a moving two-part viewpoint – simultaneously an emotional profile of a prominent transgender activist and a sharp examination of media coverage about trans issues.

Judicial Struggle at the Highest Court

This feature traces ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he prepares for court proceedings in the significant highest court case US v Skirmetti. These arguments occurred in late 2024, with the judiciary ultimately deciding in support of Tennessee's argument, effectively allowing bans on healthcare for trans young people to remain in effect across over twenty US states.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in only 16 months, shared Feder during a conversation. By contrast, my earlier film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was a real push. Our intention was to raise dialogue so people would understand more about the case.

Human Story Amid Legal Battle

While Feder offers a comprehensive analysis of how mainstream news organizations have promoted transphobic narratives, the film's primary accomplishment may be its engaging depiction of Strangio. Usually a cautious lawyer in public appearances, Strangio displays his authenticity throughout the documentary.

This represented a major challenge, to open up parts of my life to a documentary crew that I had made efforts to keep personal, explained Strangio. Feder said he wanted the next generation to know that we fought, to see what was done in service of these struggles for our material survival.

Diverse Voices in the Movement

To strengthen Strangio's story, Feder features numerous transgender activists, including prominent leaders from media and entertainment. The documentary also features viewpoints from cisgender supporters who examine how established media outlets have added to negative reporting of transgender people.

The experience of trans young people key to the court battle is represented through a remarkable 12-year-old activist named Mila. Viewers initially witness her fighting for her peers at a educational meeting, with subsequent scenes showing her demonstrating for trans rights outside the highest court.

Personal Moments Beyond the Legal Battle

The documentary also includes emotional moments where Feder steps outside the constant political struggle, such as scenes of Strangio traveling in Italy and getting a tattoo featuring lines from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prediction."

This ink scene is one of my preferred parts in the movie, stated Strangio. Getting inked is nearly like a reflective experience for me, to be fully present in my body and to view it as a vessel for things that are meaningful to me.

Physical Identity and Portrayal

Feder's attention to thoughtfully showing Strangio adding to his tattoo collection highlights that this documentary is primarily about trans physical selves – not just those of youth who confront prohibition of their right to live genuinely in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the various subjects who appear in the film.

I make films with a message, and part of that is picking people who are exceptional and concise enough to carry the camera, stated Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an interview, my response is anything that makes you feel attractive. This is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we struggle so much with our appearance.

Legacy and Optimism

A key factor that causes Feder's films excel is his clear talent for making his transgender interviewees feel comfortable, seen and appreciated. This technique develops real connection between Feder and Strangio, enabling the filmmaker to achieve his aim of portraying Strangio as a whole person and leaving a testament for coming generations of how persistently he and others have campaigned for transgender rights.

I hope not people to find themselves in a place of incessant discouragement because of what the law is failing to provide us, explained Strangio. I aim to be in a method of using the law to lessen harm, but not to transform it into some type of channel for our freedom possibilities. State bodies is not going to be the mirror through which we see ourselves. Trans people are that reflection, and it's extremely vital that we continue having that dialogue in addition to discussions about fighting back these regulations and approaches.
