Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
